Ed Reed’s position at Bethune-Cookman University sparked controversy in the college football world.
Indeed, on Monday, students at the university staged an organized protest calling on school leaders to resume talks with the Pro Football Hall of Famer.
In response to this backlash, Bethune-Cookman released this official statement on Tuesday:
“To conclude the chapter on Mr. Reed, he was a tremendous player. Yet, as we continued to observe him, we realized that his behavior was not consistent with the traditions of our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, and the University ” said interim president Dr. Lawrence Drake on the university’s website.

Reed agreed to take over as head football coach of Bethune-Cookman in December. But last week, he announced that contract talks with the university had fallen through after publicly criticizing their facilities. The video of Reed’s emotional departure from the team went viral on social media.
Despite the students’ response, it appears that Bethune-Cookman will not negotiate with Reed again.
