Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton got his first interview of the coaching cycle on Monday night.
Payton interviewed with the Houston Texans, one of four teams granted permission to speak with the one-time Super Bowl champion. The Denver Broncos will interview Payton tomorrow.
The news of Payton speaking with the Texans drew a lot of comment from NFL fans and the media.
ESPN’s David Newton said, “Interesting. He said earlier today he wouldn’t be interviewing until Tuesday.”
“I don’t care what you say. Hiring Sean Payton puts this team in position to compete for the AFC South next year. #WeAreTexans,” said one optimistic Houston fan.
One Vikings fan said, “Assuming he regains full control and I think he will, this is probably the most lucrative job for a coach in his position.” “Even if it’s mostly based on 2009.”
Another Texans fan said, “Don’t let him out of the building without a deal. Let’s go.”
In addition to the Texans and Broncos, the Panthers and Cardinals are also allowed to speak with Payton.
The 59-year-old coach is under contract with the Saints until 2024.
