Sean Payton started the interview process a little earlier than expected.
Houston Texans confirmed it he interviewed head coach for his vacant position on Monday evening.
Payton told Colin Cowherd Earlier Monday he had interviews with the Texans, Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers this week. However, he said that he could not start the interview process till Tuesday.
It’s not clear how he spoke with the Texan on Monday, but it’s possible the NFL’s rule does not apply to virtual or phone interviews.
Payton also told Cowherd that he would “absolutely” consider coaching the Texans. He cited his ownership and familiarity with “really good draft capital” when discussing the team’s “growth potential”.
Houston has 11 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, including picks No. 2 and 12. However, the Texans would have to pay some draft compensation to the New Orleans Saints to acquire Payton.
The Texans went 3–13–1 behind Lovie Smith, who was fired after completing his first season with the team. While a Week 18 win cost them the No. 1 pick, they could use one of their early selections at quarterback to help build a brighter future.
Payton said he is meeting with Panthers owner David Tepper in New York later in the week. According to ESPN’s Adam SchefterHe is scheduled to meet the Broncos on Tuesday morning.
