WNBA star Brittney Griner, who spent almost a year imprisoned in Russia, received a huge honor in her home state of Arizona last year.
The Arizona Republic named Griner “Arizonan of the Year”, an honor given to some notable figures over the years.
Griner received the same honor as former NFL player Pat Tillman. Of course, Tillman gave his life in battle while serving his country.
The decision to award Griner was somewhat controversial.
“Brittany Griner Named Arizonan of the Year, Conservatives Predictably Freak Out,” The Root tweeted.
Many were happy to see Griner win the award, while others raised concerns about it.
One fan wrote, “Congratulations, Ms. Griner! Suck it, freaker-outers.”
One fan said, “Eh, I can see where the debate would go. We’re not conservative. We certainly weren’t concerned about it, but there are certainly some Arizonans who deserve that title and award.” ,
Griner is now back in the United States, having been traded back home by President Biden.
She is reportedly set to resume her WNBA career this year.
